Thurday on the art sceen and general by arlo moon

Ok friends I am here again with an update on things.  Ok who the hell is reading this really? lol.  Well this week has been hectic with all the deadlines that there were.  I am not going to get the submission for the Phili show done it was almost there.  I wish I wasn't so damn lazy or its a ton at one time actually so maybe its better time managment I do have a full time job and ot hopefully and kids a family and then art all the time so its a bit.  I wish I had have done it only a few days earilier.  One problem is that themed shows are cool to the person who is going to the art show.  I can see that cause your like ok I know whats about in a way but its hard when you make stuff that you like and then your like well ok I do want to show more and go to other cities at least my art will.  I did find a gallery that would let me send the art to them and if it didnt sell then they would just charge me to send it back after the show.  I dont know how unique this is. But hopefully not as a practice because that is cool.  So there is that.  I really cant blame the theme thing but its like ok what the hell do I make and when you usually deal with non-representational abstract its like its counter-object in a way.  Now lets make mostly that and then lets fit a theme.  One solution is to only try to fit my art into the shows that matches the art I am doing. Yes friends I have thought of this before you say it.  Ok your not responding here...lol...  But then I wonder what is the limit of shows you can have.  I would have been on time if it was only a few days more.  I was working on some theme stuff for the fall theme for the 83 hop show so that is a break from what I usually do.  So this is where the extra stuff comes in.  I worked on that and a painting for a show I was closing on this wednesday at Divine Chiropactic.  It was a one man show.  Last weekend was a long one which I like because I feel like on the weekend it was long and then that is a good feeling because you dont get back to work in a blip its like you were away, kind of nice.  I stayed up both friday and saturday night all night and worked on one oil dragon painting for the 83 gallery show it is larger than 16 x 20 and came out good.  Of course there is room to make it better I am going to try again on that.  I also worked on like 4 smaller paintings for the same show and then the one for Divine as I mentioned.  I worked on taking some of the drawings that I have been working on for a week or so since granny was sick it makes me have to watch Zach my son more so that is good to spend time with him but hard to work on painting or god forbid sculpture.  So I started drawing more and then this last week I worked on making some stencils because I am influences by Joss Parker a pop artist here in Columbus.  I knew about the ideas of pop art because I know some about Andy Warhol but Joss is a friend and I have been thinking that is a need style.  I have tried spary paint before never could get a feel for it except for painting skulls or my old band name back in Las Cruces under the bridges there but for the most part it was like fuck that because I never considered it useable for making art in general.  I know that seems narrow minded but my father is an oil painter and it just wasnt presented to me to be at the same level.  But there you are its all about what you do with the tools you have.  Anyway in conversations with Joss even on the very first day I met him I was intreged to the process. I love a good process.  I like the stencils made of paper but then after a few times of painting on them they become harder and can be reused.  I find that ever since Andy Warhol info to be very interesting.  The abilty to reproduce is almost on the polar opposite of what I usually do so that is crazy.  Anyway...blah blah blah here... I was experimenting on this process.  I made a smaller attacking dog stencil which I have used now a few llike 15 times.  Both drawing a version of the origional again from my sketch book . then I made a large dragon version and attempted to cut that out.  Its wierd if you havn't made a stecil before because its like you make a drawing and after you get one done you realize that you cant cut it all out because it falls apart or moves when you paint it   ex.  with spray paint.  I finaly realized its a series of stencils.  I knew this for the colors but basically what I was doing there is the detail out line...  that is why when Joss is posting  R and D and the copier I was ok.... its very good to post things it helps me   so the design then like a series of copies for the different parts.  or is it its not down all the way..  but at least two for now  think if it was a square so one square for the whole line drawing then a slit style line drawing stencil for high lights.... or is it a negititve for the square..as in the actual square bing not there at all you paint that and the solid square is ...  ok you get the picture here...     I did try to make a detailed dragon large size and I only cut out the head and the neck  it was a pain to get that done actually only to have it suck.  Either it wasn't painted on enough yet or what ... its like stained glass as for the design to have the whole thing like having to have a trim to hold it together.  I wondered if you could just tape it down or better I wondered I know at Walmart they have a sticker maker its like 20 dollars and the stickers incert is like 10 dollars...I was that is cool but what stickers would you make.. well I was thinking ...if you take your design and make it a sticker and then just stick it on the canvas or surface then that would keep it down to the surface but then you need to cut it anyway so there is that... Or another possiblity ...damn I could go on and  on.. here  anyway I worked on that ....

another problem I discovered when I was ex. with spray paint.  I paint in a basement so its close quarters all ready and oil paint smells bad enough but spray paint is way worse.  In small amounts no problem but if your learning it its a bit early to hold back.  So there is that.  A great advantage is that it drys quick.  Disadvantage is that the colors are limited to what they make...maybe there is a ton.

so that lead me to an interesting idea.. basically air blush so you can use house paints or mixes to get the list of variations on the color.
combine this with the realism idea that I got back about three months ago of using a picture on a computer zoomed in at 800 persent then you look at the picsols...cant spell...do it you will see that there is a ton of color variations.... so ..I was talking to Nick Stull another artist who is bad ass and I was like damn I cant mix colors anyway so that would be hard to try to do some crazy shit like that he was like what you do is go to home depo or lows and get the sample color sheets that have ...this gives you a ton of grey ..... he used it in a great piece maybe more to get the color instead of all painting it..  I know he can mix so I wont go there but that was a great idea I did do that..
but back to what i was saying....

combine the realism to computer to pixal layout and the idea of mass production of pop art  not so much the content.. it could be pop content not important here... then air brush it cause you can have the variation of color.  here the kicker....
seperated each picel by one space... so on a grid...its all sperated.... for instance its like 30 pics. for an eye...I counted it..lol... yeah I said it 30 per eye of varing colors lighter and darker grays or what have you .... then you get done with one face lets say....
ok make another layout then over lap them....

then a way crazy part...do 20 then over lap them its 20 faces all together....maybe too much... but

so then I was looking at Joss's piece pez which I own.. and he used a pizza pan for the back ground ...ok he is a master or something cause I was like small dots that crazy if its spary paint cause how can you get that with out it running...or ...its a trip... I was combine that with  the layout idea and only high light the ones with the certain color....so one for each variation and you would come out with a

pop process of mass production but of photo realistic pieces .... so like the supper realism of the past of course they didnt use a computer to lay it out but what the hell its another tool..

its a ton of time and my wife said ...ok why dont you make one as in one face....get that done before you go all that way..

anyway this week I had a ton of stuff to get done and I finally got two pieces for phili that isnt going to get there now.  I tore down a show at Divine and painted for a show coming up at 83 and was troubled at work for a while there but its back to normal with a new ideal on what is important.

Well until we meet again friends...  there is the upcoming shows on saturday at cs gallery that I have a spot outside on...I guess James Kelly who is really great is showing for the month show ...so that is cool and of course the upcoming shows there on wednesday and the next 83 gallery show and man I hope to get in to a show at the pop shop in Cleveland..and build this shit up right... to a network of galleries...ok Joss dont trip every one can do that you didnt do that first....ok you did give me that idea..but   so note every body ....showing in one city is cool but showing in 9 cities is better right...fuck why not.  ok I haven't quiet got there yet but have to get this shit down more and then get a mechine built... we will see.... now I blog instead of making art..lol.... talk toyou soon
